Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams carry on the musical tradition of great singing couples: Johnny and June, Graham and Emmylou, Michael and Cary Ann (Shovels & Rope)… Onstage, they truly are hotter than a pepper sprout, jamming and harmonizing on songs carved from old-growth Americana. It was Emmylou herself who said, “The music Larry and Teresa make when they sing together is truly transcendent, with the blend of their voices on songs that are always deeply moving.”
Larry was for years the leader of Levon Helm’s shape-shifting Midnight Ramble Band, earning three Grammys for producing the legend’s final three CDs; Teresa, as an indispensable band member, frequently brought the house down.
The couple’s debut CD, Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams, is an extension of that time, featuring eight originals and three covers honed on the carpet of Levon’s barn. Songs include the Muscle Shoals-inflected CD opener “Surrender to Love,” the heart-wrenching ballad “Another One More Time,” and boot-stomper “Bad Luck Charm.”
A shortlist of other artists they’ve worked with, live and in-studio, include Bob Dylan (Larry spent eight years on the Never Ending Tour), Paul Simon, Little Feat, Hot Tuna, Phil Lesh, Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow and Mavis Staples.
